    From Coombsville’s Most Historic Vineyard

The most historic and revered vineyard in the Coombsville AVA isn’t a household name, and it doesn’t grow Cabernet for $150+ bottles. It’s the century-plus-old R.W. Moore Vineyard, and it produces some of the greatest Zinfandel in California.

For years, legend Larry Turley turned Moore fruit into the iconic Turley Moore Earthquake Vineyard Zin. Today, only two single-vineyard Zins come from this special site: One is made by top-end Zin specialist Biale, and the other is the 2021 Mike & Molly Hendry R.W. Moore Vineyard Zinfandel.

Grown in a stellar season on a hallowed site, crafted by Zinfandel royalty, this bottle is primed for greatness.

The couple behind this wine has Zinfandel in their blood. Mike Hendry is a member of the iconic Hendry family, who’ve crafted numerous Wine Access favorites. His wife Molly is the niece of Bill Moore, the vineyard owner.

The Moore Vineyard was planted in 1905, and when Bill bought it in the early 80s, he knew he had a Zinfandel treasure: vines over 75 years old, a site thick with volcanic ash, and a long and drawn-out growing season thanks to San Pablo Bay fog that doesn’t burn off until late in the day. In fact, the Zin vines—which are barely tall enough to brush your knees—had been trained to lie low to absorb the earth’s radiant heat.

When the couple purchased five tons of Moore’s precious Zinfandel grapes in 2009, the Mike & Molly Hendry label was born. Now, more than a decade in, they’re putting out a new classic. It’s the only wine they produce, and it packs as much pedigree as any Zin in the Golden State.
